Introduction to Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is not for the fainthearted, it is the ultimate mental and physical outdoor activity that demands a delicate balance of power and flexibility.

Climbing is comprised of many different sports that all share similar characteristics and is one of the nations fastest growing adventure sports and in addition, climbing is something now widely practiced in our society.

Climbing is inherently dangerous and the risk of death or serious injury can never be completely eliminated.

There are many good the books available on rock climbing and areas in which to do so, such as Red Rock Canyon National Monument which is unique in North American for climbing offering a wide variety of routes to the easy short climbs to the really hard and extreme long routes.

If you have never rock climbed before then perhaps a guided rock climbing trip and classes would be a good place to start, there are many available at outdoor summer camps where you can plan your custom rock climbing course with groups of one to three or more.

Rock Climbers use many words to communicate with each other whilst climbing such watch me, take in, Slack, climb when ready, ect ect, each of these short phrases could be the difference between life and death, and it is always a good idea to be able to understand exactly what your partner is saying to you at any point during the climb. and to be able to understand them.

Harnesses are the essential pieces of gear necessary in rock climbing, made from sturdy molded-nylon, with gear loops that stand out from the harness and keep your climbing gear close for quick and easy access. There are many make out there so the only advice really that I can offer on harnesses is to choose one that fits you comfortably, and offers the option to adjust the leg loops. Wearing a helmet while climbing is recommended even if there are other climbers not wearing one, a helmet could save your life.

Rock climbing is considered by many to be the fastest growing sport in the world; and if you want to experience an outdoor sport which challenges both your mental and physical capabilities, then rock climbing is for you.
